Осенью 1982 года отправила письмо генеральному секретарю ЦК
КПСС Юрию Андропову, чью фотографию случайно увидела на
обложке журнала «Тайм». В нем девочка писала:

In the Fall of 1982 Samantha sent a letter to the General Secretary of the
Central Committee of the Communist Party, Yuri Andropov whose photo
she happened to see on the cover of the magazine "Time." In the letter she
wrote:

"Меня зовут Саманта Смит. Мне 10 лет. Поздравляю вас с вашим
новым назначением. Я очень беспокоюсь, не начнется ли ядерная          
война между Советским Союзом и Соединенными Штатами... Вы,
конечно, не обязаны отвечать, но я хотела бы знать, почему вы
хотите завоевать весь мир или по крайней мере нашу страну?"

"My name is Samantha Smith. I am 10 years old. I congratulate you on your
new position. I am very worried that an atomic war could begin between the
Soviet Union and the Untied States....You, of course, do not need to answer
this question but i would like to know why you want to conquer all the
world or, if not that, our country?"

Получив письмо, Юрий Андропов пригласил девочку в Советский
Союз, чтобы она сама убедилась, хотят ли русские войны. 7 июля
1983 года Саманта отправилась в СССР. За две недели она успела
побывать в Москве, Ленинграде и «Артеке», где ее приняли в
почетные пионеры. В Советском Союзе популярность Саманты была
необычайной.

On receiving the letter, Yuri Andropov, invited the young girl to the Soviet
Union so that she could see for herself if the Russians wanted war. On July
7, 1983, Samantha set out for the Soviet Union. For two weeks she was in
Moscow, Leningrad and at Artek where she was received as a provisional
Young Pioneer. In the Soviet Union the popularity of Samantha was  
uncustomary.

25 августа 1985 года Саманта Смит вместе с отцом погибла в
авиационной катастрофе.

In August, 1985, Samantha and her father were killed in an aircraft accident.
